30 Days Wild 2020 - Day 16 - Ode To A Stinging Nettle

For today's 30 Days Wild activity I took my picnic blanket, my pad of paper and pencil out into the garden and attempted to be inspired to write a poem.  The weather was pleasant and sunny although the clouds have rolled over now and we're due rain later.  I looked around the garden and was inspired to write a poem about an unlikely subject.  The stinging nettle...

Ode To A Stinging Nettle

Oh tall, green, stinging nettle,

You are a protected fortress

Growing to test my mettle

Among my garden’s mess.

You grow archers on your battlements

Who fire at the slightest touch

And leave arrows and discontent

In the wounded flesh of such

Intrepid soldiers who come to raid

And tear away your foundations.

Yet none come to your aid,

Not even those who make observations

About your purpose and reason

For being in this world at all.

You protect the flying maiden

Who lays her eggs within your halls.

Oh tall, green, stinging nettle,

You are a protected fortress

Without the strength of stone and metal,

Formidable in my garden’s mess.
