Hello everyone! I know, I've left it a long time again before doing another post, but today I wanted to share some photos with you from our recent holiday in Norfolk with my in-laws.
Day 1: Wells Next The Sea
On our first day of holiday we were picked up by my in-laws and started our journey from hot, sunny Cambridgeshire into hot, sunny Norfolk. We stopped at Denver for a picnic, but I don't have any interesting photos from that part! Our second stop on the journey was Wells Next The Sea. Turns out that today Norfolk wasn't hot and sunny, but cool and very windy! A real change from Cambridgeshire! At Wells we headed for the beach and discovered that the sea was a very long way out. Apparently most of this part of the coast is like that - the tide goes in and out rather rapidly and its very much possible to be caught and stranded (fortunately we weren't stranded). We enjoyed the local flora and fauna and spent some time playing in the lovely sand and making a giant sandcastle!
Day 1, Part 2: Kelling
We're staying in the village of Kelling and its a short-ish walk across to the sea, so we took the opportunity this evening to do so. It was very pleasant and we even had the good fortune to see and hear a curlew and also watch a hare race across the fields! The sunset was pretty awesome, with a lot of the sun hidden by the clouds (a picture below). It was a lovely walk. Also included are some pictures of the flora and fauna of the cottage we stayed in, which were actually taken on Day 3, but it made sense to include them here!
Day 2: Cley Marshes
Turns out that we're doing lots of birdwatching on this brief spell in Norfolk! Today we headed over to Cley Marshes to do a bit of twitching. It was highly enjoyable. Not all the birds are photographed, but here is a list of all the birds we saw (by the way, when I write "X species" it just means I couldn't be bothered to count all of that species that I saw!): X Greylag Geese, X Canada Geese, 1 Shelduck, X Mallard, 1 Little Egret, 3 Spoonbill, 1 Marsh Harrier, 2 Coots, X Avocets, X Lapwing, 1 Snipe, 1 Spotted Redshank (amazing dark summer plumage!), X Redshank, X Black-Headed Gulls, X Swifts, 1 Skylark, X House Martin, 2 Pied Wagtail. We also headed down to Cley Beach where I enjoyed watching the Little Terns flying along and diving for food (no photos of that part sadly).
Day 3: North Norfolk Railway (The Poppy Line)
Today we headed over to The Poppy Line (which lived up to its name and had some poppies near the line). There was also a vintage transport day on at the same time so mixed in with the trains, flowers and scenic views you'll also see a few vintage vehicles. There isn't really much to say about this day, so I'll leave you with some nice photos.
Day 4: Holme Dunes Nature Reserve
Today is the final day of our trip and the day we head home. However, we like to stop on route so we headed to Holme Dunes Nature Reserve (where you can see across The Wash to Lincolnshire!). This is a lovely reserve although we didn't see all that much bird life sadly. Plenty of butterflies though and some lovely flora.
I hope you enjoyed reading about our holiday, we had a lovely time, see you at the next posting!
